Lake Lanier Backyard Remodel

We recently completed a stunning Lake Lanier backyard remodel just outside of Gainesville, GA. This project was completed in two phases; the first was major grading work on the structure of the yard with the end goal to create a safe and easy way to access the dock area. The primary issue was the backyard was very steep. In fact, it was so steep that a golf cart could not make it up the hill. The majority of the path was slick red clay and loose gravel which did not help matters. The second phase was the hardscaping that provides the entertainment and relaxation areas around the property.

The below photos were taken during the first phase of construction and ended with the finished product of the entertaining spaces.

Retaining walls are key to creating a terrace system. Hardscape stones are the preferred way to build retaining walls while adding a tasteful touch to the project. Another good thing about hardscape stones is that they come in many colors and shapes to match the customer’s design taste.

Adding proper drainage is critical when building on steep slopes. Adding hardscapes increases the impermeable surface area so installing drains in the right area to redirect water will decrease erosion and extend the life of your hardscape.

Such steep declines made the dock area difficult for older family members to enjoy.

After a few extra add ons the project was completed and the homeowner now had their backyard in a beautiful state with many uses!

With an extensive concrete path system, they could now take older family members to the dock area without worrying about accidents.

The fire pit and patio area were placed along the upper retaining wall so a full view of the dock and surrounding Lake Lanier could be enjoyed.

The construction of the concrete path was a large undertaking due to the geography of the backyard. We felt it was the right decision because it would give the homeowner the most longevity and ease of use. The path starts at the road so carts and foot traffic can easily get down to the dock.

The fire pit area can seat a large number of guests.

Steps were installed to make the final leg down to the dock safe and easy. We like to use slap stones because they proved secure footing while blending into the environment with their organic shape.

No lake house is complete without a giant back porch. The current porch was constructed to accommodate Fall football games and mid-summer lake entertaining. It’s complete with a cooking area, fish cleaning station, and lots of storage plus amazing lake views!

Second-story access from the back porch was important for the homeowner so the deck theme was kept flowing to the top level.

Redesigning the front entrance was the final step of the remodel. The existing entrance had a deteriorating stone path with a few struggling shrubs to greet visitors. To replicate the texture of limestone slabs a special concrete mixture was used to create the front steps. Using boulders and native vegetation the front entrance is much more inviting while being low maintenance.

A closer look at the front steps. The subtle bubbles give the steps a great texture and make them stand out over classic concrete steps.

We absolutely loved the challenge of this project and our contractors always come up with creative solutions to home owner’s needs.
